With a profound reverence for the interplay of light and shadow, Chris Froeter weaves narratives that transcend the physical realm, inviting viewers into a world where emotions shimmer and memories linger.
The human figure has always fascinated Chris. Figurative work interprets a point in time as I see it. The process is intimate and emotional; if luck will have it, the portrait captures more than light and shadow. It tells the story of the individual. Between light and shadow, a realm exists where the human figure emerges as both subject and storyteller.
Through the work, shadows become storytellers, whispering secrets of the past and hints of the future. At the same time, light serves as a beacon of hope, illuminating the path toward self-discovery and enlightenment.
The power resides in the unspoken, the beauty that lies in vulnerability.
BACKGROUND
Chris studied fine art painting and printmaking at Southern Illinois University. He has a BFA in design from Northern Illinois University. In Chicago, Chris has run a branding firm, Conjure, for more than 25 years.
I’m grateful to have studied under two instructors who changed how I think about image-making, Herb Fink and James Alexander, from the disciplined technical aspect to a philosophical understanding of what art means in the artist’s life. A special thank you to Kay Zivkovich, who was my boss at The Craft Shop, a part-time job I had on campus at SIU. She single-handedly, with great compassion and a take-no-bullshit approach, set my life on course with art.
My work follows both additive and subtractive methods on linen or a metal plate. These contrary actions of moving pigment to find light and shadow are of one mind and enduring.
